DRIVING TIPS FOR RAINY DAYS
Even great drivers can get a little nervous or feel
challenged while driving in wet wintery weather. Being prepared and
making extra time for travel can make a big difference and help you to
feel more secure and safe while traveling. The following are some simple
driving tips to consider during this rainy season:
-
>Allow Additional Time for Travel - always leave 10
- 15 minutes earlier than normal while driving in the rain or fog.
-
>Check Tire Tread - check the tread on your tires
before the rainy season, to ensure less chance of sliding or
hydroplaning.
>Check Tire Pressure - always have the manufactured
recommended amount of pressure in your tires to ensure tires are at
their maximum performance.
>Change Windshield Wipers - wipers sit out in the
elements all year long. They can get warped or cracked. Change your
wipers before the rain comes.
>Turn Your Headlights On - in California, it is the law
that your headlights are on if your windshield wipers are going.
>Extra Space Between Cars - always leave additional
space between your car and the car in front of you to avoid a collision
if the front car brakes quickly.
>Drive in Middle Lanes - usually roads are a little bit
higher in the middle lanes so water will runoff. Drive in the middle
lanes whenever possible to avoid standing water.
>Avoid Standing Water - try to avoid standing water, as
you cannot see beneath it, there could be a large pot hole in the
pavement hiding below.
>Tap Your Brakes - if you do happen to drive through a
puddle, tap your brakes a few times to dry your brake rotors.
>Watch Out for Pedestrians - be especially careful to
watch out for pedestrians. Pedestrians can be harder to spot during the
rain, especially if they are wearing dark clothes.

CITY OF MERCED
G STREET UNDERPASS COMPLETION CELEBRATION
According to the City of Merced, all four lanes on G Street
at the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe
tracks will open on December 3rd. The city will hold a Community
Celebration and Pedestrian Preview of the underpass beginning at
10:30 am on Saturday, December 3rd. A formal dedication of the
project will be held at noon.
The underpass is the largest road project in the city's history.
Drivers will no longer have to stop for the train crossings, and the
new underpass allows for greater traffic flow and for quicker
response time for emergency vehicles. To read more about this
