TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Bike/Walk

Riding a bike to work is an old trend with new benefits. As Americans become increasingly health conscious, they realize that bicycling is a viable commute option. Instead of going to the gym after work, try riding your bicycle to work.  Riding a bike to work won't just make you healthier --it will also save you money. Did you know that cycling is one of the least expensive forms of transportation? It cost just pennies a day.  With the increase cost of gas it is becoming increasingly a viable alternative.

Bike to Work Week

Bike to Work Week was May 17-21, 2010. This exciting and fun event promotes cycling as a form of transportation to the workplace. It celebrates those who bicycle commute throughout the year, and supports an environmentally friendly transportation option and promotes clean air.

Commute Connection with our sponsors, REI and San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District held a raffle for commuters who pledged to bike or walk during Bike to Work Week. As in the past, Commute Connection gave Bike to Work T-Shirts to all participants and held a drawing to give away two bicycles and two helmets. One winner was chosen from San Joaquin County and one from Stanislaus County.

The winner from San Joaquin County was Kaleb Anderson. Kaleb is at student at San Joaquin Delta College and works in Stockton's Lincoln Center. Kaleb (pictured) was in need of a new bike, as he rides to work on a regular basis and the brakes on his old bike' were wearing out as were the soles on his tennis shoes! The winner from Stanislaus County was Laurie French. Laurie rode her old bike to work to the City of Modesto. Both welcomed their new rides!

New Tax Free Reimbursement for Bikers

Starting January 2009, workers who use two-wheelers as their primary transportation mode to get to and from work will be eligible for a $20-a-month, tax-free reimbursement from their employers for bicycle-related expenses. For more information click HERE.

Cost Savings

Bicycling is one of the least expensive ways to get to work, and walking saves even more.  More than half of all Americans live less than five miles from where they work.  The average annual price of keeping an automobile running is at least $3,000.  The cost of running a bike for a year is less than $300.  Enjoy the savings.

Great Exercise

Walking and Bicycling is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise.  Personal fitness is improved without setting aside additional time for exercise.

Saving the Environment

Bicycling is the most efficient form of transportation.  Bikes are self-powered, quite, don’t eat gas, don’t release toxic fumes, don’t drip car fluids, reduce road wear and pollutants from the air we breathe.

Serenity & Pleasure

Bicycle commuters can leave behind congested roadways for a quiet back street or a scenic bike path.  Commute with a bike buddy and make it fun and socially rewarding.

Parking Relief

More and more employers are struggling with limited parking.  Once at work, parking is usually a breeze for bike commuters.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Using a bicycle to commute 4 days a week for 4 miles (one-way) saves 54 gallons of gas annually.
  • Seven to twelve bicycles can park in one automobile parking space.
  • It costs about $50 to build and maintain one space in a bike rack and $500 for a bike locker, yet one car parking space in a parking structure costs about $8,500.
  • Bike-to-Work Week is celebrated every May.
